Here's the thing... Calloway is a great writer. His imagery is fantastic. His storytelling is superb. He is NOT lacking in this, at all. This story only got 2 stars from me because... well, because it was a part of a story. Everything I've read from this writer so far has been so good, but so truncated. It's almost like I'm reading a very good piece of a story. I'm ready for the whole book.
This story is about a young man rescued by his father and their escape from the Bloodcloaks. Others in the area are also on the search for Joshka, because they believe that if they return him to the Bloodcloaks, the carnage will quiet again.
The premise is solid, and again, the writing is fantastic. It's just so hard to care about the characters or their plight, their path, and their hardships. This would be a great full length novel if Calloway ever felt like expanding.
