Nick Harkaway gives steampunk a try with this alternative history of World War II and its aftermath. Excellent adventure, good characters, thought-provoking situations. There was even the occasional turn of phrase that I loved. Suffers in comparison with his debut though. I still think The Gone Away World takes the cake for most inventive novel this decade so far. Not to mention brilliant characters, profoundly troubling questions about what it means to be human, riproaring adventure. and bellylaughs that will disturb the neighbors.
