While perhaps not as strong as its predecessor, this sequel to The Princess Academy is still a terrific example of fine storytelling. Miri and several of her Mount Eskel friends are invited to the capital by the Princess to continue their studies in various capacities. For Miri, that means the chance to study at the university. On her first day she is given a question to ponder: You are in a burning building and you have time to rescue only one item, either a priceless painting or a prisoner who has committed some foul crime against humanity. Which do you choose? Before long, Miri finds herself in this kind of situation and must make her own choice. Hale's characters are complex--neither entirely good nor bad, which gives Miri's dilemma more depth. Fans of the first book will not be disappointed in this latest offering.
