Closer to 3.5 stars than 4.

This one took me a little while to really get into. For the first 75-100 pages it was slow going for me. After 100 pages or so, I was completely drawn in and devoured the rest in two sittings.

The mystery is a bit convoluted and unfocused, but I think that was the point. There is no clear cut path for anyone to follow, so Holmes, Russell, and Lestrade end up going their separate ways for large portions of the book. Because everyone is pursuing a different investigation, some of those lines of inquiry end up being completely pointless in the end. Judging by a lot of the other reviews, a lot of people were pretty frustrated by this. I understand their point, but I think I see where King was going with this. Detection isn't a science, so you're going to end up with red herrings and lines of investigation that prove to be pretty far from the mark.

Overall, my least favourite of the series so far, but it was still very satisfying. On to book 4!
