Poor Garfield! He had barely begun his administration's campaign to reform the Civil Service, clean up the Post Office and just generally try to get "boss" politics out of government when he was shot by a a deluded former Oneida Colony inmate. This is the tale of a President, a madman and a series of disastrous medical decisions which make you squirm as you read them. The book is a terrific read. I listened to part of it commuting in my car. Either way, it i hard to tear yourself away from this truth-is-stranger-than-fiction saga. P.S. I think I would really have liked Garfield the man - reader, college professor, general, congressman and all around ethical guy.
