it was amazing

Shelby Foote was a novelist, which accounts for the wonderfully vivid description found throughout his history of the Civil War. His is the best multi-volume history of the war. As a Mississippian, he lets his dislike of Grant show through, even while acknowledging the man's obvious military talent. I disagree with Foote, but I found his insight a welcome relief from the hagiographic treatment Grant receives from other historians.

Foote's "Shiloh," incidentally, is a masterful exposition of the Civil War combat experience. Well worth the reading.
