Madeline Miller's retelling of the Illiad from the perspective of Patroclus, Achilles' best friend and lover, is brilliant. She captures your heart with Patroclus' woeful story and Achilles heroic one; gradually turning Patroclus into the hero and Achilles into a man haunted by his choices. Miller's retelling is accessible and poetic, making it a great choice for high school students who need to read the Illiad - because it will develop their interest in the story, before they have to read the classical version. But, adults, both those who loved the Illiad and those who struggled with it, will find this book compelling. Miller is a Latin and Greek language teacher. This is her first novel. I can't wait for her next book!
