It is not easy to find something new to say about Pessoa, but I cannot help writing a word or two, either. My impression of Pessoa is that his art is an insatiable passion to make several people live in one skin. Yet, it does not take long before one realizes how painful an endeavour that can be. While it is not an idea I want to make too much of, I would like to claim that the major paradox in Pessoa's life stems from the question of how to reconcile a reserved outer personality to an extremely colorful inner one. It is definitely not an unfamiliar story for many, and a lot has already been said about him leading a desperately solitary life. Judging him from the poems in this book, however, I render that Pessoa does accomplish to invent an almost happy world of his own, and his poetry is just a glass of cold water served on a hot day.
