really liked it

An interesting, satisfying and unusual love story, if sometimes a bit heavy going, which could be down to the translation I read. The main male character has an obsessive, passionate but unreturned love for one woman lasting half a century. Despite his eternal love for her, he has many relationships with other woman over the years, sometimes humorous, sometimes disturbing. The book is full of wonderful characterisations, quirkiness and scenes that make you laugh out loud. But it is fundamentally a story of love.
