really liked it
bookshelves: middle-grade, mysteries, slatebreakers
Read in July, 2012

Kate Messner has been prolific in 2011 & 2012 - Marty McGuire, Capture the Flag, and this outstanding gem, Eye of the Storm. This book is kind of perfect for the current educational climate: it blends speculative fiction, classic mystery plot construction, and strong young characters in a setting that emphasizes STEM concepts. If I were a classroom teacher I would be all over this book, planning cross-curricular lessons utilizing meteorology and engineering to engage readers in the setting of the story.

I also appreciated how this book featured many strong, smart women at different stages of their life and careers. Jaden is of course the first character that comes to mind, but then there is the librarian, Jaden's stepmom, and her grandmother - all Slatebreaking characters, but one turns out to be the baddie. So fascinating. I admire Kate Messner's character construction, especially with girl characters.
