I loved this book! I have always had a thing for science fiction, but it's been a while since I truly indulged in this genre. Clearly, this is not high-end literature, but let's not be snotty, this is a jolly good romp. The book gets a point deduction because sensitive readers might get the wrong idea about science and research, no matter how clearly it is stated that this is a run-away, non-condoned mission which is also being chased by US military to be forcefully shut down.
The idea is to genetically engineer an "ancestor" mammalian creature with organs that can be used for transplant. This goal has been attempted and failed many times by the team in the book. They have genius scientist Jian with major psychiatric problems. Her boss Ruhmkorrf reduced her medicine to get progress, but what he gets is something else entirely. The surrogate mothers, cows, do not bear benign herbivores for organ harvest. Their wombs are ripped open by creatures with an ancient genetic code, engineered to be smart and aditionally ravenously hungry. In the mix are several characters - Sara and Colding for one, who indulge in an affair - including a dog that are deeply sympathetic and that you really care about. As the engineering is taking place on an isolated island, it's a race against time to get off it because the last human beings have been hunted down and killed.
This is highly recommended for fans of horror movies and science fiction. There's a long, deliciously slow build-up of tension before all hell breaks lose. A wonderful book! I'll be reading more of this author for sure.
