Cheryl Strayed decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail by herself after her life was devastated by her mother's death. I happened upon this memoir not via the great reviews it has been receiving, but because her "Dear Sugar" columns on The Rumpus are stunning and profound pieces of writing. Now that she has come out as Sugar, she hasn't written a column for a few months and I'm jonesing for more of her stuff. This memoir tides me over, just a little, but it is wonderfully written, brutally honest, and 1,100 miles alone traveled by a woman who had never spent a single day backpacking is really amazing stuff. You really do feel a bit like you're on the trail with her, traveling this journey of self-discovery that I, for one, will ever only experience vicariously.
