Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power
by Rachel Maddow
by Rachel Maddow
This book should be a must read for every US citizen. It is a very well researched and written book that is being well received from both Democrats and Republicans as being fair and balanced (especially since the folks on the right do not generally agree with her on most issues).
Her premise here is that the US President has gotten too much power to wage war and bypass Congressional declarations of war, which are required by the Constitution. She starts with Vietnam and ends with the past decade's two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Her critique of Ronald Reagan and his handling of Iran-Contra and the invasion of Granada are spot on and reminded me how much of that I missed as a teenager and didn't know happened. And the chapter on nuclear weapons and our nuclear weapons program specifically should send up red flares and alarms about the dangers of this aging arsenal, which needs a rethink and a complete overhaul! And we are the "responsible" nuclear power. Read that chapter and think about what is going on in other countries and you will be scared of the possibility of an accidental nuclear war. Scary stuff.
But do not despair as she has a detailed plan of action to fix a very broken system. I am only giving the book 4 stars because I find some of her commentary to be too cutesy. It is something she does on camera where it works, but it fell flat (at least for me) on the printed page. All in all though, a truly captivating book.
