really liked it

Hemingway (or somebody) seems to have wiped the american literary scene clean of this kind of lush fantasy. The tone continually teeters on the edge of bad taste (too arch, or too sentimental), the plot is mostly nonsense... And yet I enjoyed almost all of it.

Buried (sometimes too poorly, sometimes too well) underneath the mess on the surface is a story about lost romantic illusions.
