One of the huge benifits of being the mother of teens is re-reading all the classics with them. I think you have to read the Odyssey several times to really grow to appreciate it. Everytime I read it, I find more to love. It is easy to see why this is a classic, any book you can read and re-read is on my list of cassic must reads! What an amazing plot, the rampet symbolism, the universal themes it's all there. I like the Fagels translation but have yet to read another, perhaps next read I will delve into another translation. This is a book that is better enjoyed read aloud. I borrowed a tape of the Fitzgerald translation read by a man with an English accent and I must say that really added to my appreciation of the oral tradition of this work. If you find it difficult to access the text, I highly recommend a tape or cd.
