An enjoyable vacation read which I took to Italy with me last year and read in a few days.
Particularly for people with no prior knowledge of Italy and its culture and history, this is a good read, and although of the same ilk as the various Tuscan idylls: "Under the summer sun" etc, it is a more realistic portrait of real Italian life.

I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the vigil and death of Pope John Paul II, as we arrived in Rome shortly after he had been beatified and Vatican City was covered in giant murals and portraits of him.

The description of Doerr's apartment sounds very much like the hotel and hotel room we had booked (6 rooms in all in a rather ancient but pleasant enough building close to the Colosseum).
