Silver: Return to Treasure Island
by Andrew Motion
by Andrew Motion
This is great fun if, like me, you grew up reading Treasure Island. It's not really a sequel - more like Motion playing with elements of the story and of the characters. Nonetheless, it's hugely enjoyable. There's moral sensibility, an awareness of nature and a love story in this - none of which appear in the original book. The first third of the book verges on being a masterpiece but it all gets very post modern on reaching the island and I'm not convinced by the ending that's not really an ending. To be fair, it's beautifully written and does make you think. Where's the rattling good pirate story though? One for adults who read Stevenson in their youth - not for young boys.
