Teasure Island_ meets _The Maltese Falcon_, with a deft expertise of both the sea novel and noir. The only reason I didn't give five stars is that parts of it dragged, especially as the characters don't actually get on a boat until halfway through. Also, the lead character's constant dwelling on hwo this will all end badly while demonstrating a fine self-awareness of genre begins to become a rather redundant single note long before the last third of the novel.
