This was what Tolkein was working to get at, or the voice at least that he had in his head.

There is so much to like about the book, beginning with the vigorous translation that made the story immediate. Here, the strange world of the old ways came alive. Underneath there is a very interesting discussion about the role of the righteous but fleeting king.

For the sound of the poetry -- ah! Read this aloud. It has been a long time since I've read a book with such pleasure.
