Valerie Leftman has an imperfect life. Her parents argue all the time, everyone at school calls her "Sister Death" and bullies her and her boyfriend, Nick Levil. She and Nick have a spiral notebook where they list everything and everyone they hate. Nick comes to school one day, and starts shooting people on the "Hate List", starting with Christy Bruter, a girl who was constantly picking on Valerie. He kills at least half a dozen, and he injures more. Valerie saves the life of Jessica Campbell by throwing herself in front of Nick. Nick shoots her in the thigh, then he kills himself. She is put in the hospital, people still think she is guilty, and no one will forgive her. After she has healed enough, she is put in the psych ward. She is put into therapy for the rest of the summer. When she returns to school to finish her senior year, everyone id mad at her, except Jessica Campbell. In the end she comes to terms with all the families who were effected by the shooting.
This book was amazing, and so touching. I nearly cried. It shows that there are consequences to bullying that can be deadly. It shows hate does exist and it shouldn't. If you want a touching, heart-warming, realistic novel, then Hate List is for you.
