When I first read this I was in secondary school and there was lots of hype about this book. Everyone seemed to be reading it. Maybe because I was at that age where I enjoyed being diffrent from everyone else I don't think I was to impressed with it, I know thats a funny thing to say about a book like this but I can't think of another way of putting it. However this time reading it, I was horrified by what his mother had done to him. I read alot of books about this type of abuse and one of the things that stuck me most about what she was doing to Dave, was that it was just happening to Dave. He was made to feel like an outsider in his own family, not that I wanted his mother to beat the other children but he must of felt so alone and questioned all the time, why him and not the others? His father was a spineless piece of shit. What sort of man lets his wife beat his child? but then what sort of woman feels the need to beat her child? I'm glad that you get to see at the end of the book that Dave has a good relationship with his own son. So many cases like this just get repeated in a vicious cycle. I've got the next one to read on mount tbr, again I've read it before but I really don't remember any of it. I would like to see how Dave grew from boy to man away from his evil mother.
