really liked it
bookshelves: romance

This is an introspective character study. I wouldn't be able to recommend it to everyone, but I found the character development fascinating and was guessing until the end. The romance was like a train wreck: so, so wrong (see: Stockholm syndrome), but you can't look away because the sparks are pretty. I'm often too dubious about the characters to be titillated by most YA romance I read -- not so with this book. Dude was hot!

I'm ticking off one star because I would have liked to see some religion in the book. I don't mean fundie "God will protect you" crap, but anger at God or something. This is America and I think most people grapple with that sort of thing in extreme situations such as kidnapping. In that respect, I felt the characters were being held back.

In all other respects though, I really enjoyed this book. I've read one other book by this author, and she is a master at letting character dictate story.
