I really enjoyed this book - it was completed different from what I expected. This is no cheesy or generic romance about people from different worlds coming together and living happily ever after. It is dark, mysterious and chilling; full of blood and sacrifice. I loved and was creeped out by the courts of Mayhem and Misery under the slag heap; populated with dead children and creatures from European myths and fairytales, and the prosperous town of Gentry above that owes its existence to the good will of the fey folk, and the citizens that are prepared to turn a blind eye to the payment for that prosperity. The character of Mackie was well realised - his obvious differences from his peers and his attempts to blend into the background and not be noticed. The pain he suffers as he tries to make a life for himself in a world that is slowly poisoning him. I also loved his sister Emma as she fights to save him from the inevitable. It reminded me a little of a Tim Burton landscape crossed with Stephen King's sleepy towns that hide dark and terrible secrets, and parents that are prepared to pay a terrible price for the so-called happiness of its citizens. Really good stuff that nightmares are made of - but with love and hope that things can change, and evil overcome. Wonderful
