Mr Brett is an excellent storyteller. While I'm not normally a big fan of the "soap opera" writing style (you know, when the author writes a bunch of characters then jumps to and fro for each. It's why I stopped reading A Game of Thrones). This one only has three character stories, and you could see him weaving them together (eventually). I still consider Arlan the main character, and I found I liked him a lot.

The main concept is brilliant. Fear has been justified for self preservation, but humanity is losing. The world is stuck. Travel near impossible, trade difficult... and of course, there's no exploration. The population can't keep up with losses and the numbers are falling. The focus is on breeding rather than fighting back.

Arlan would rather fight and die than hide and possibly die. The world is harsh and all three characters lead very difficult lives. However, this makes them stronger and I'm looking forward to seeing how they face their future trials.
