I swore I would not read this book; I'd never even heard of it until the movie was released. However, one of my grade four students was reading it, so I felt obligated to become familiar with it. Initially, I admit that I despised the topic selected for a book with a teenaged target audience, but truly it's far less offensive than A Clockwork Orange, which was common highschool reading decades ago. This first book in the trilogy introduces the characters, and the Hunger Games, a fight-to-death extreme reality show produced by the government as a show of control. I felt that the writing was somewhat choppy, but I can see how the book would appeal to younger teens.
