Over 700 pages and I was sorry when I finished it. This is a radically multidisciplinary book that somehow incorporates everything interesting into one coherent narrative. While the thesis that violence has declined is optimistic, Pinker doesn't blow sunshine at you. Stunning data and solid analysis made digestible with lots of examples and humor. I regularly had to put the book down to catch my intellectual breath. The accounts of historical violence were hard to read - sometimes seemed to be more gruesome than would have been necessary to get the point. OTherwise, a joy to read.
