a must-read for any teacher (or any student for that matter). mccourt's style of writing (straightforward storytelling) is engaging and inspiring. he makes me want to be the best teacher for the best reasons. he tells real stories and meditates on his own abilities as a teacher, revealing his strengths and the areas in which he constantly struggled throughout his career. his true classroom anecdotes are priceless! it's hilarious and inspiring and moving and all-around wonderful.

Charly Weird. I can honestly say this book had the exact opposite effect on me. (Except for a few funny parts). McCourt only seemed to use the classroom to express his rather pathetic, depressed life. I empathized with him, even at times thought he was interesting, but found nothing, and I mean nothing, inspiring about him.
