Sometimes I feel like I’m ignorant when I read a popular book everyone loves and I just don’t get it. This book was about a shepherd boy who has a dream about finding a treasure in the Pyramids of Egypt. A gypsy woman and a mysterious king advise him to go do it. Santiago sells his sheep and travels to Tangier. He gets sidetracked and has to stay there for a time after a thief steals all of his money. So he works in a crystal shop for a year where he learns some valuable lessons. Once he earns his money back and is encouraged by an Englishman, he sets off again thru the desert to find his treasure. He meets the love of his live in an oasis but she encourages to keep going and then come back to her when he finds it. During his journey, the boy meets an alchemist. An alchemist is a person who believes if you continue to burn medal, it will eventually reveal the Elixir of life. They travel together until the boy reaches his destination. I really didn’t enjoy this book. I didn’t feel enlightened and I took issue with the philosophy of love and life to pursue the finding of treasure. To me, life and love doesn’t have anything to do with being rich. Sometimes you lose what you love because you are monetarily rich. This part bothered me because I felt it took away from the lesson the book was trying to convey. The only reason I would be glad that I read this book, is just to say I did.

Jerry It looks like you have plenty of company -- of 1800+ reviews on amazon, 323 were 1 or 2 star; many felt it was "drivel" !
