This is an entertaining authorized sequel to Wells' "The Time Machine" in which Baxter explores issues that Wells did not (such as changing the past). Fans of Wells' other works will notice various elements taken from other of his stories - such as the atomic bomb from "The World Set Free" and the tanks from "The Land Ironclads". Baxter also includes a few cute references to other SF novels and stories (at one point, "overhead, without any fuss, the stars were coming out," while at another point, there is a reference to a "clash of cymbals" (the UK title of the Blish novel "The Triumph of Time" was "A Clash of Cymbals")).
