This book took about 50 pages to really get going. The ending was worth it, though. I enjoy Ondaatje's writing because his plots are unpredictable. I hate reading a book just to see if what happens is what I guessed was going to happen; I will do it, but if in the end I'm right, I want my time back. Ondaatje's not like that at all. He also manages to be clear about what's happening without leaving the reader feeling that it all has been laid out for you on a platter.
