The book started strong, I quickly got caught up in Rachel's story and the history of Moloka'i and leprosy. About halfway through the book I was ready for the story to end. It could have used another pass through an editor. There was a lot of historical technical information about the island itself, which some made it interesting, too much made me want to quit reading. The character development was very good and the isolation, fear, betrayal that these people felt when removed from their loved ones was intense. The beauty in how they survived and loved each other was heartwarming.

Robyn You review nails it! This book DID need another pass through an editor and like you, the magnitude of detail made me want to stop.

Amy Agreed!

message 3: by Donna (new)

Donna I agree wholeheartedly! Editing certainly not as rigorous, in some publishing houses, as in past decades.
