Wanted to like this, cause how many books feature a trans, bi-racial narrator, and are just sitting around at the library? I can appreciate that the author is trying to capture the language of her (?) straightforward, dudely narrator--but the writing is awkward and all wrong in the ear. This reads like a first draft--the bones of something that could be okay after a few rewrites. As it stands, though, the prose neither has the joyful, hungry energy of from-the-gut writing, or the natural rhythm of work that has found its voice. Besides that, the main character doesn't seem all that interesting. Aside from being trans, I'm not sure what's going on with him, if anything. (The book opens with him calmly restarting a relationship with a father who calls him up after a fifteen year absence.) I wouldn't necessarily give up on future work from the author, but this one was too difficult to connect with to bother reading.
