Based on the true story of Mary Ingles, who was kidnapped with her children by the Shawnee Indians in the 1700s. She was eventually able to escape only to begin the roughly 1000 mile walk back home. 5 stars for her strength, courage, ability to survive starvation and extreme weather, and navigation abilities. If it wasn't based on a true story, I don't know if I would believe a human could survive that. My three stars, however, is for the ability for the story to keep my interest. The day after day of walking was monotonous and exhausting for me as a reader, which may have been the author's way of empathizing with Mary's situation, but it wasn't very entertaining. Great discussion material for the hard choices she had to make and I really enjoyed finding out what happened to everyone in the epilogue.
