This is a stunning novel. Dan Chaon doesn't so much create characters as introduce you to people you've probably noticed sometime in your life and then tell you who they are and how they got that way. His story travels back and forth in time and traces what happens to two young men raised in two small, midwestern towns, but it really is about the past and how we choose to incorporate it into our present. Also, you meet a cool kid named Loomis.

It would be difficult to summarize the story without spoilers, so just go get this book and try it out.
