Sullivan is a terrific writer, witty and thoughtful essayists. The collection itself is uneven (and should have been culled, I think, to be somewhat thinner, and to remove the weaker pieces). Some mgaziney pieces were less interesting, other essays were indulgently long (though still good, but would have been better with some editing). I'm sure I read his pieces in Harper's before they were collected in this book, but they didn't seem to stay with me. I picked up this book because of the great reviews, which are well deserved, and I'm glad I did.
