Somewhat predictable and at times preachy, but still an intriguing story with a surprisingly likeable main character (after the first chapter, in which she's a spoiled brat--but luckily that's exactly the point, and she has to deal with the consequences). I'm not sure the friendships are entirely believeable, and the plot depends on a plethora of stereotypes about Indians and Romani, but many of the Victorian elements are very well researched, and I found myself really rooting for Gemma despite some of the stupid mistakes she makes. I especially appreciated how atmospheric the whole thing was. First in a series, and I'll definitely be checking out at least the second book.

Meredith I liked this series, too. Not mind-blowing or anything, but fun.
