Whether your medium is painting, writing, or anything else, Steal Like An Artist does a good job of telling you that it's okay to draw inspiration from many places. Great artists mix and match their favorite things into their own style. Instead of the often-heard advice of writing what you know, you should concentrate on writing the books you want to read.

It's a short book (only took me about an hour), but it's well worth the time invested. The book is full of amusing sketches and quotes from famous artists that go a long way to support the author's points. This is the sort of book you'll pass around to all of your artist friends, and the sort of book you can read often when you need some motivation.
