Everyone has told me to read this book, and I am glad I did although I think I may have appreciated it more when I was younger. It is sad and sweet and surprisingly uplifting. The sense of place is powerful. The plot is slow, but it is unusual to believe the positive portral of generally unredeaming characters through the eyes of a young girl. As well as seeing hard experiences with a positive twist through the eyes of the same character. It is fiction that reads like a memoir.
