This seemed more of a collection of short stories about the same characters that Erdrich then tried to pin together as a novel, to me. I enjoyed reading it and some of the stories were wonderful - especially the earlier ones - but as a novel it was messy at best. I also think she tried to do too much in this - the wide range of characters stopped me from getting close to them, with the exception of Marie, which meant I didn't care about them and had little emotional involvement. The scale of time she covered was also a problem at times because the characters didn't so much develop as change unrecognisably: the Lulu I loved in her first story was not the same woman that we encountered later. Perhaps if we saw her development I would believe her to be the same character but we never did - Erdrich often missed out the pivotal moment in her characters' lives - the part that changed them into the person we later saw. Despite, all this, I did enjoy the stories and I want to get to know all the characters better. I just wished she'd focused on a select few, so that we could really have seen them develop.
