This is a great American epic in three parts - it takes place mainly in southern Florida at the turn of the twentieth century, in the Everglades. A sugar planter is followed by rumor and innuendo, and the first section is from the point of view of his uneducated neighbors. The second section is from the point of view of his youngest son, who is trying to find out the truth about his father after his death. The third section is a first-person narrative, by the same 'violent' planter, and we learn yet another version. It is left to the reader to make up his own mind. The writing throughout is riveting, it is a long book, but worth reading.
