Bared to You (Crossfire, #1)

*** POTENTIAL SPOILERS*** This one was a mixed bag for me. Let me preface my review by stating that I love Sylvia Day's novels and patiently await each and every one. I didn't know this was in the works and was pleasantly surprised to find it. What I didn't realize was that it was catagorized as a "50 Shades" type book. Had I known, I might have skipped it as I had no desire to delve into that world. I love me a sexy book and alpha males are the business. Sylvia knows how to deliver on all fronts, but the relationship between Eva and Gideon, however hot, annoyed me. Eva started out seemingly as a take charge of her own life, take no mess no matter how fine/rich/sexy you are kind of woman and I was like, finally! And trust me, I understand weakness, human frailty and flaws, but what took place between the 2 of them was just plain old masochistic - and not in a good way. Her buddy Cary didn't do her any favors, knowing her background and pushing her toward Gideon anyway and telling her mom about him also rubbed me wrong. I hated the way she caved and allowed him his secrets when she laid bare her soul to him. The double standards drove me crazy. Her sexual dependence on him and her self doubt made me angry and sad. Drowning every problem she had in alcohol didn't help nor did it help that her mother and step-father dogged her every move. Suffice it to say, there was a whole lot of dysfunction going on with just about everybody but her boss and his lover. I expected a bit of angst, but was not prepared for the level of it in this novel. I usually steer clear of these but didn't research carefully enough before I clicked the send to my Kindle button - also Sylvia's an auto-buy for me. I could go on but I'll end my rant here. I will be checking out the reviews for the second in the series. Not really sure I want to read more of this. If you are a "Fifty Shades" fan, and a fan of more erotic fare, this one's for you. If you hate train wrecks waiting to happen, it not. Not giving up on Ms. Day, but I will think twice before checking out the next book.
