It's light hearted fun and a perfect read on a lazy afternoon while contemplating where to go on holiday next. Naturally, I love the bit in the book about their experience in the alpine regions best, given my nationality and the fact that Northerners in Germany view their Southern counterparts with the same benevolent malice as people do in the UK.

Jerome K Jerome's exploits about three friends who escape their respective families to have perhaps one last flutter of freedom before middleage claims them is a charming book that is often overshadowed by the success of Three Men in a Boot. Oddly enough, I prefer this book, which may lack the lustre of youth but has the witty insight of experience that comes with age. The locations and mode of transport - bikes - are well chosen to create humourous misunderstandings and complications. For anyone whose contemplating a cycling trip, this is a must-read book.
