really liked it

I liked Seabiscuit a lot, even though I have no interest in horses. I love survival-on-raft stories and am interested in WWII, so had no qualms about picking this book up.

It's a fascinating and harrowing story, but could have been edited down a bit, I thought. And there are places Hillebrand didn't go, or didn't stay long, that I would have liked. This is the story of one man (or two or three, if you count Phil and the Bird) but I would have liked more exploration of what it is in a society that causes people to be so cruel, and what should be the response. Not that these questions aren't dealt with frequently enough elsewhere, but this mass market book might have been a good place to engage the discussion more.
