After reading Talley's book, That Which Should Not Be
, I decided to read his short stories as well. I wasn't disappointed with this brief compilation of three short stories. Unlike so many collections, especially those by one author, the three stories contained in Thrice were remarkably different. The first is almost science fiction, set in a dystopian future where the government can control people's minds. The second is more like magical realism, with people disappearing from Los Angeles for no discernible reason. The last is straight up Gothic horror and reminded me of classic works in that genre. But all were excellent and a great diversion for when you don't want to invest a lot of time in an entire novel.
