Fran Roanoke...really? I read the name of the colony and said aloud to my husband, "The colony is named Roanoke...that can't be good." So with that spoiler handed to us by Scalzi himself I went on to still enjoy the third book in the "Old Man's War" series. In my opinion iit was a bit ploddier (is that a word?) than the first two, but I am a sucker for survival stories. The ending redeemed the story. Campy and gooey but I loved it...both the political and personal issues. John Perry, our Old Man hero was back as narrator, but his witty repartee falls a little flat at times considering the grim situations. A quick light read, and a must if you want to read the following "Zoe's Tale" which I enjoyed even more than this book.
