I thoroughly enjoyed this book right up until the very last chapter, which didn't quite satisfy - hence four stars, though I'd like to say 4.75! The dovetailing that tied up all the loose ends seemed a little too pat and I almost felt that it had been cut because it all happened so fast.
But the insights and understanding of the human condition were superb throughout, and I loved the gentle way these were dealt with. I can empathise with the characters from where I am in age, but I suspect anyone could because the book is so well-written. The writing is also beautiful but not intrusive in its cleverness. The evocation of India worked wonderfully, and it seems little changed from when I visited many moons ago. Am now keen to see the film, although of course well prepared for changes necessary to the different medium.
Wonderful read, all in all.

I'm in the middle of reading this and enjoying it very much. Funny, interesting, beautifully written, insightful. And I'm probably the right age to get it all too well!
