it was amazing

One of my favorite Erdrich books. Of the Love Medicine tryptich this was for me both the most cohesive and the most fleshed out. It is also the most steeped in the Native American story and more important - contains the influence of christianizing Native Americans in the midwestern Great Plains. This is under-addressed in historical fiction and non-fiction. More often we read of the displacement of children in boarding schools, but this was perhaps mor prevalent and culturally influential - and to Christian missionaries, successful.
