Historical fiction novel set in the time of King Alfred. England is on the verge of being overruled by the Danes (think Vikings). Alfred has a vision to unite England into one entity. You get this great contrast between the meek Christian Alfred and the brutish, warrior Uhtred - the protagonist.

I really enjoyed this immersion into life in the 800's. And I enjoyed the intense antagonism between the brutal Danes and the Christians. Christianity just isn't overtly hated like it used to be. But there are plenty of forces trying to undermine the faith. So, perhaps seeing it in stark contrast made me appreciate that Christianity still is a real struggle.

Anways...enjoyable read.
