really liked it

Very compelling use of the story of a highly competent dreamer as a platform to ask the question, "What is Freedom?" Sounds simplistic because it is. Krakauer deftly integrates McCandless's story with those of other people who lit out for the territory, including his own. He's a fine writer as well. I am baffled by how many of these reviewers take a visceral dislike to McCandless. So he was ridiculous. So what? Maybe at a party he was that annoying dogmatic guy who people tried to avoid, but if you can just get those guys drunk or high enough they calm down and have some very amazing stories to tell. Also, you cannot have the discipline to master all the skills he did and be the spoiled brat so many think he was. Dude had heroes; good for him. 4 1/2 stars.
