This book reminds me a lot of two others I've read recently, Uglies and Matched. In this new American society, the experts have decided that love is actually a fatal disease that leads to most of society's crime, violence, craziness, sadness, and anger. So at age 18 everyone gets a procedure that cures them from the delirium of love. Our main character is very excited to be cured, after having her mother suffer from love to disastrous effects. But, only a few months before turning 18 she meets Alex, the first boy she ever comes in contact with, and then everything changes. Other than having so much of the plot feel similiar to me (which isn't this author's fault that I happened to read the other books first), I really enjoyed the story and the perspective of emotions from our narrator. The ending is very surprising and I suspect the sequels will take the story in a whole new direction.
